Hansford heads to the mountain

Ryan Hansford and the Multispares Torana will be competing at Mt Panorama Bathurst this coming weekend, Nov 10, 11 & 12 for round 5 of the 2023 Touring Car Masters series.

Ryan won round 5 at The Bend, and sits 2nd in the series points.

With a dozen of the New Zealand TCM field coming over for Bathurst and Adelaide it will be brilliant having a big field rumbling around the mountain as part of the Bathurst International round for TCR. Racing will be shown live on Nine and Stan Sport on Saturday afternoon, followed by live coverage on Sunday exclusive on Stan Sport.

Like his dad Gregg, who is the only person to have won at Bathurst on 2 and 4 wheels, Ryan has always had success at Bathurst where natural talent results in fast lap times, particularly across the top of the mountain.

Despite the long straights favouring the 6 Litre engine, Ryan has managed to win races at Bathurst in his 5L powered Torana, by getting pole position, then getting a great start and fending off the faster cars up mountain straight. If he gets in the lead and gets good run from turn 2 to the cutting he is normally fast enough across the top part of the track to build a gap and stay in front.

On the flip side if he is back in the pack and can’t build that gap, the bigger horsepower cars drive past him up and down the straights and there is no-where to pass them across the top, which is frustrating when you are faster but can’t find a way past.

This means qualifying is the most critical session of the weekend and one Ryan looks forward to each visit to world-famous track. All drivers will tell you driving 10 tenths on new tyres at Bathurst is a very special feeling and always rewards bravery and high skills.

Series points.

  • Steven Johnson 740
  • Ryan Hansford 590
  • Andrew Fisher 568
  • Cameron Tilley 536

With just this round this weekend being televised on Stan Sport everyone can watch by taking advantage of the free 7-day trial. In 2024, TCM will revert to being live on Fox and Kayo at every round.
The final round in Adelaide as part of the Adelaide 500 on Nov 23 – 26, will also be shown on Fox sports and Kayo.
