The performance of braking systems in commercial vehicles is paramount. Knorr-Bremse understands this, which is why they’ve been leading the way in the development of world-class braking systems for over 100 years.
Who is Knorr-Bremse?
The Knorr-Bremse Group is based in Germany, where it was founded 110 years ago. The company is known as the world’s leading manufacturer of braking systems, and it also supplies sub-systems for a range of rail and commercial vehicle applications. The company has been focused on the continued development of braking technology for years, but it also has an interest in expanding further into diagnostics, as we’ll touch on later.
To put the size of the company into perspective, it employs around 27,000 people worldwide and, in 2020, reported sales of around 6.2 billion Euros.
Cojali acquisition
In addition to the brand’s long history of excellence in its field, Knorr-Bremse has also recently acquired a major interest in Spanish company Cojali S.L. This move looks set to considerably boost its aftermarket business and give Knorr better access to connectivity and digitisation technologies.
Of particular interest is the fact that Knorr will gain access to Cojali’s Jaltests Diagnostics and Jaltest Telematics. In terms of further developing the current range of remote diagnostics technology, this is a huge step forward for both Knorr-Bremse and Cojali.
Braking systems
The products offered by Knorr are quite diverse, essentially providing complete braking systems for commercial vehicles. The brand is also extremely well-regarded in rail systems, but for the purpose of this article, we’re more concerned about its commercial vehicle braking systems.
With over 100 years of experience, Knorr is one of the largest manufacturers of original truck equipment and aftermarket parts for American trucks, as well as most European trucks. Their range of truck parts and truck systems includes:
· Vibration dampers
· Compressors
· Exhaust brakes
· Air treatment
· Transmission management
· Valves
· Electronic systems
· Actuators
· Air disc brakes
· Drum brakes
Essentially, Knorr covers all aspects of braking control systems, including pneumatics, mechanics, electronics and complex control engineering.
Pneumatics: In commercial vehicles, compressed air is produced by compressors and stored for use when braking. The air is then directed to the brake actuators via the control valves. Compressed air is perhaps the most important aspect of commercial vehicle operation for brake system performance and reliability.
Mechanics: Knorr specialises in heavy-duty disc brakes that are lightweight but extremely effective. With the ability to achieve a clamping force of 300 kN and retardation of 900 kW, Knorr mechanics are trusted by countless heavy vehicle manufacturers.
Electronics: Modern braking systems utilise electronics to improve not only the speed but the reliability of braking. Knorr is always at the forefront of innovation when it comes to designing electronic systems and components to provide better safety, handling, stability and comfort for drivers.
Complex control engineering: Knorr has been producing complex pneumatic control systems for over 100 years, and it doesn’t just apply to braking. Their systems are utilised in truck air suspension and throughout the powertrain.
The technical excellence of Knorr braking systems has been on display for decades, with worldwide research constantly being conducted to find new ways of improving vehicle safety and handling. That’s why they’re one of the world’s leading suppliers of brake systems for heavy and commercial vehicles.
