The driveshaft is a key component of a vehicle’s drive train which couples its engine and wheels. The driveshaft is the main link between your transmission system and the drive axle. It works by transmitting torque and rotation from the transmission system to the drive axle and wheels.

How DANA Founders Revolutionized The Driveshaft
DANA attributes its existence to the development made by the company’s founder, Clarence Spicer, to improve driveshaft technology. In 1899 Clarence Spicer invented the first practical design of a universal joint (U-joint) for use in the automotive industry. In 1905, he established the Spicer Universal Joint Manufacturing Company to produce and distribute his revolutionary invention. The company was later rebranded as the Spicer Manufacturing Company in 1909.
Spicer’s Universal Joint made it possible to connect rigid rods with different axle orientations. This universal joint enabled manufacturers to vary the alignment and distances between the driving and driven components of a mechanism. This was a key development that increased heavy vehicle manufacturers’ options when designing longer buses, trucks and trailers.
In 1914, Charles Dana, an attorney, purchased a controlling interest in the company. Dana became the company’s president and treasurer in 1916 considerably improving its operations and portfolio. In recognition of Charles Dana’s leadership, the company was renamed the DANA Corporation in 1946 and the Spicer® name was retained as the brand name for its driveline products.

3. HPDTM 75 Series
The Spicer Compact High-Power Density Driveshaft 75 Series delivers the highest possible power density of DANA’s driveshaft designs. It employs a hollow sliding solution that reduces the weight and axial friction forces acting on the shaft. It also features DANA’s patented axial cup retention and optimized yoke geometry system that enhances its life cycle.
